Ensuring Your Kids Receive The Child Support They Need

Divorce is hard on all members of the family, including children. There may be disputes over issues like child custody, which can spill over into disputes related to child support. While these topics can be heated, it is critical for parents to continue to meet the financial obligations they have to their kids. If you are going through a divorce and expect child support to be a factor in your case, it is a good idea to seek the advice of an experienced family law attorney who will work to ensure that the support award meets the needs of the children and is sustainable for both parents.

At the law offices of Daniel W. Uhlfelder, P.A., in Santa Rosa Beach, we help clients face various complex issues when going through a divorce, including child support. When you retain our services, you will receive genuine, personal attention every step of the way. Knowing what unique concerns are complicating your situation is how we can determine what options will suit you best. To take advantage of a free consultation about your legal needs, give us a call at 850-909-2225 or reach out online.

What Factors Determine The Amount Of Child Support Paid?

There are certain guidelines and regulations that determine the amount of child support awarded in Florida. Based on formulas, child support considers factors such as:

  • The income of both parents
  • The number of children requiring support
  • Each parent’s share of parenting time (custody)

The court typically orders the “noncustodial” parent to pay child support. The noncustodial parent is the parent with whom the child lives a smaller percentage of the time. The money is intended to pay for the basics of child rearing, including food, clothing, educational expenses, medical care and other costs. Calculations for child support are entirely separate from other financial matters in divorce, such as division of property and spousal support (alimony).

Because these calculations are largely formulaic, it is critical to ensure that the court has complete and accurate information from both parties, including any context that may not be reflected in the raw data. Only then can the court issue a child support award that meets the needs of the children and is sustainable for both parents.

Each party has the right to contest the amount of support these formulas calculate due to certain circumstances. As an experienced litigator and skillful negotiator, attorney Uhlfelder will work with you to protect your children’s interests and your rights as a parent.
